{"id":295,"date":"2015-04-04T16:02:25","date_gmt":"2015-04-04T13:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wasp.ee\/?page_id=295"},"modified":"2017-08-08T10:07:34","modified_gmt":"2017-08-08T07:07:34","slug":"estonian-id-card","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wasp.ee\/en\/estonian-id-card\/","title":{"rendered":"Estonian ID card"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Estonia has by far the most highly-developed national ID card system in the world.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Much more than simply a legal picture ID, the mandatory national card serves as the digital access card for all of Estonia\u2019s secure e-services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The chip on the card carries embedded files which, using 2048-bit public key encryption, enable it to be used as definitive proof of ID in an electronic environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here are <strong>some examples<\/strong> of how the ID Card is regularly used in Estonia:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>As a national ID card for legal travel within the EU for Estonian citizens<\/li>\n<li>As the national health insurance card<\/li>\n<li>As proof of identification when logging into bank accounts from a home computer<\/li>\n<li>As a pre-paid public transport ticket in Tallinn and Tartu<\/li>\n<li>For digital signatures<\/li>\n<li>For i-voting<\/li>\n<li>For accessing government databases to check one\u2019s medical records, file taxes, etc.<\/li>\n<li>For picking up e-Prescriptions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Because e-Estonia\u2019s infrastructure is an open system, new services can always be integrated. Businesses can freely use the digital signature system as well, and have applied it to a variety of web-based services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Estonia boasts one of the world\u2019s most advanced digital signature systems thanks to two crucial developments:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">In March 2000, Parliament passed a law giving electronic signatures the same legal weight as traditional paper signatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>The nation\u2019s groundbreaking electronic ID infrastructure has created an effective and universal system for secure identification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When a website offers the digital signature option:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The user has entered the information to be signed (tax declaration, ballot choices, contracts, etc.).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The site asks the user if they would like to digitally sign the information.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">If the user clicks \u2018yes\u2019, a window from a third-party Certificate Center pops up, asking for the PIN codes connected to the user\u2019s electronic ID Card.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Certificate Center verifies the codes and sends a confirmation back to the website.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Estonia has by far the most highly-developed national ID card system in the world.
